Apostolics are labeled as a cult because we hold onto standards. One of those standards is that the men should cut their hair and not let it grow long, and that the women keep their hair uncut (no trimming or anything of the sort). In this blog I am going to explain why we hold to this standard. Before you read this blog maybe it would be better for you to listen to Lee Stoneking preach about it. What he says is everything and more than this blog will show you, he explains it better than I could. So here is the link if you want to listen instead of read about why we should cut our hair as men and keep our hair uncut as women: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NSloXSo51Oo
We need to start by answering the question, "Is this standard of men having cut hair and women having uncut hair in the bible?" Yes..It is (1Corinthians 11:2-16). We are going to study these verses to get to the bottom of this as usual.
The next question that comes up is, "If this is in the bible, isn't it a ceremonial law, therefore not required?" Also the statement is made by people who do not believe, "That was for that time, we do not have to do that now." No, this verse is not a ceremonial law (A ceremony or practice required in the Old Testament that foreshadowed the coming of the Messiah, but is no longer required), It is a Moral Law (A law that reflects Gods character, therefore it will always be required).
This is why men and women's cut and uncut hair is a moral law and not a ceremonial law. (1Corinthians 11:3) "But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of every woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." It is the order of Gods creation that makes the uncut hair of a woman, and the cut hair of a man a moral law of God. Man was made for God, and is the glory and image of God, therefore man is the only one who can approach God uncovered, but woman was made from and for man, and is the glory of the man, and not directly God, therefore the woman is to be covered when she approaches God (1Corinthians 11:7). This does not make woman unequal to man, it is only the order in which God chose to create. Since the cut and uncut hair have to do with the order of creation by God, it makes this a moral law, therefore standing forever.
Besides all of this, Paul told the Corinthians to follow his ordinances (referring to the cut and uncut hair of the male and female mentioned a couple verses later (1Corinthians 11:2). Paul could not have told the people of Corinth to keep the ordinances if it were a ceremonial law, because Paul taught against commanding people to follow ceremonial laws (Colossians 2:16-17). This was something in the New Testament that was told to be followed, therefore it had to be a moral law and not a ceremonial law. If they were told to follow it then, we have to follow it today. There is no new covenant that changes this, and there is nothing that makes us special, or that makes us exempt of following the command for men to keep their hair cut, and for women to keep their hair uncut.
According to Paul, because of the order of creation, women have power on their head with the angels (1Corinthians 11:10). The word "because" in (1Corinthians 11:10) can also mean "with", "by", "through", "among", or "from". Therefore we can say "For this cause ought the woman have power on her head with, by, through, among, or from, the angels." There are many miracles that have been done by God because women have kept this law of uncut hair. I recommend you go back up to the top of this blog and copy and past the link to watch Lee Stonekings teaching of men and womens cut and uncut hair. He tells about the miracles that have been done by God for people because the obedience of women with "power on their head with the angels."
To God, long hair on a man is dishonorable and a shame, and cut or trimmed hair on a woman is dishonorable and shameful. (1Corinthians 11:4-6) "Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head. But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven. For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered." Lee Stoneking comments on the matter in his videos and says, "I do not see how a person who professes to love God would want to put their self in a position that God looks at as shameful."
Paul asks us to judge in ourselves if it is comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered (1Corinthians 11:13). Then he goes on to say "doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him? but if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering" because mens hair naturally falls out or thins over time, and womens hair is naturally thicker and grows faster than a mans, and does not fall out, it shows that men having long hair is shameful, and women having cut hair is shameful. He concludes his teaching on cut and uncut hair by saying this. (1Corinthians 11:16) "but if any man seem to be contentious (in disagreement, or argue the matter), we have no such custom, neither in the churches of God." Maybe if we look at the New International Version of this verse it might help us understand what Paul means a little better. "If anyone wants to be contentious (in disagreement or argue the matter) about this, we have no other practice-nor do the churches of God." In other words Paul is saying, if you want to argue about this matter, you shouldnt, because all of the churches of God follow this practice of men having cut hair and women having uncut hair. To Paul there was no room for argument over this matter. It was and is the Word of God.
Men growing their hair out, and women cutting their hair like a man, is shameful to God, because of the order in which he created us. Therefore if any church claims to be a church of God they will not follow this practice. For a better understanding of this teaching i suggest you go to the top and watch Lee Stonekings videos on this teaching.
